Pedals, Patience, and Panoramas
Winter is coming, but thankfully, we’re just one day away from Sapporo! Tomorrow marks our final stretch of the bike trip, and we could not be more excited. Hokkaido has been incredible, but has tested us with freezing temperatures, ongoing bike maintenance, and long days through the hills. We are now at 1,700km (just over 1,000 miles!) and have a final 100km day tomorrow to complete the journey. It's been a rollercoaster of bike maintenance for Jared’s bike, specifically. Af

Reflections after 1000km
I am currently eating popcorn and drinking what we’ve come to call “frog beer,” one of my favorite beers we’ve found in the local konbinis. It tastes like an IPA but is a little lighter than your standard West Coast IPA. It’s been a long rest day, and though I spent more than six hours working on my bike, we still found time to eat three incredibly tasty meals and make some new friends. It’s now 11:08 PM, and we’ll be setting off on our final week of biking tomorrow at 5:00 A

Adventures in the Alps
Hello from Kashiwazaki! We’ve now made it about halfway through our month-long bike trip from Kyoto to Sapporo and are feeling great. We’ve cycled through five prefectures: Kyoto, Fukui, Gifu, Nagano, and now Niigata, and have covered just shy of 900 km so far (892 km to be exact). In the first two weeks, we had the chance to dial in our bikes, settle into the rhythm of life on the road, and test out all our equipment. Weather-wise, we’ve been quite fortunate, with only two f

Eating like kings
Behind these intriguing hanging drapes awaits a meal like no other. It's often hard to tell where to eat, w hat they're serving, or how much it costs, but with the help of Google Translate, some smiles, and occasionally an English menu, we've been able to try some incredible Japanese dishes without breaking the bank, nor speaking much Japanese. At the particular restaurant shown above, we had some tasty soba noodles that happened to be featured on a Micheline Star review guid

First days on the saddle
We have now cycled over 200km from Kyoto up to Fukui, a city along the northwestern coast of Japan. Most of our riding thus far has been along Lake Biwa and then along the coast of the Sea of Japan. The bikes are riding smoothly with only minor adjustments thus far, and our thighs are starting to feel the hours of riding. The last couple of days of riding have been stunning. The tourist season has almost ended on Lake Biwa, so it was mostly quiet riding. A bicycle path surrou

Settled in and ready to ride
My first two weeks in Japan have flown by and I am happy to say that I am finally feeling settled in. It's been incredible thus far, but it's been tough to find the time to sit down and put together my thoughts for a blog post - here we are. I have been keeping a journal and will likely include excerpts from it on blog posts here and there, but here is a brief overview of what my first chapter of Japan has looked like. Incredible Hosts I was extremely lucky to find an amazing
